NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY GUIDE (EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW)

HI THERE

I am Marianne, owner, and photographer at Newborn Magic Photography. Studio is located in Kuraby, just South of Brisbane and caters for maternity sessions and babies up to 1 year. We do include family members in both session types 🥰

HOW MUCH?

This is often the first question I get asked, but before I can answer that let’s figure out what you would like from our time together. Once we’ve found your ideal service I can give you all of the information including pricing! Our pricing reflects the level of service and luxury you’ll receive and we know you’ll be ecstatic with the final product!

When should I book?

Most women book their sessions during the end of second trimester. This way we have plenty of time to plan your dream session.

Some questions to ask yourself  What type of shoot am I looking for?

  • Posed newborn

  • Lifestyle in my own home,

  • A few fine art portraits ???……. Not yet sure? .
Most of our clients opt for a studio session - posed newborn and family portraits. This is where we do our beautiful work you will see most of on our social media and web page. We use a few props like buckets, baskets, cute bowls and tiny beds, lots of fluffy layers, flokati wool layers with wraps, little hats, bonnets and cute little headbands for the little ladies. We love when you bring something of your own….like your baby going home outfit, grandmas knitted baby blanket or a family heirloom.

When it comes to creating art for your home we will make sure the colours we choose will compliment your home decor and perhaps create a statement piece for your wall. Something with nice soft colours and textures,- perfect for the baby - something that’s uniquely YOU.

Booking a newborn session

Expecting a new baby is one of the most exhilarating and exciting times of your life. What will life look like when bub is born? What will he or she look like? Have I bought all the right stuff? How should I preserve the memories of this beautiful time of my life? For the memory part….we got you covered. Here is the ultimate guide to everything you need to know to create the perfect memories for YOUR family.

One way to add to this life experience is, of course, the beautiful maternity photographs. We have a selection of beautiful gowns and outfits you can wear, and professional hair and makeup can be organised in the studio for you, fine art nude portraits have become increasingly popular and most certainly will make a beautiful statement piece on your wall

BOOKING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

Every photographer has different styles and ways they shoot. To find the right photographer for you, it is important to take the steps and do your research. Firstly, you need to find a style that speaks to you. To do this have a look at a variety of different portfolios and pick out a few that you love. . This will ensure you like the style and would be happy with the perceived outcome. The next step will be to contact the photographer, make sure that you like who they are and that” they speak to you” . You need to feel 100% comfortable with them as a person and 100% confident that they have the experience and education they need to take good care of your brand-new baby.

Newborns are booked on a tentative date 7-12 days after your expected due date. Experienced newborn photographers recommend doing a shoot within this time frame as this is when newborns are still sleepy and don’t wake up with every little touch and move.   Now, babies don’t operate to our schedules, so there will be a fair level of flexibility with your booking date. Some babies arrive a little early, others prefer to cook a bit longer. And this is all ok, we anticipate this. Just shoot your photographer a message once the baby is born and they will accommodate for the baby’s actual birthday.

BEFORE YOUR SESSION

You have found your ideal photographer and tentatively booked a session. Yay, that’s half the Job done right there 🥰. The next step would be to have a session consultation. This can happen either over the phone or in the studio. This is when you discuss what type of photos you are looking for, who you want to have in the shoot, mum, dad, siblings….perhaps a grandparent or two, although at times it could be a bit easier to focus on just immediate family during a newborn session and do extended family when baby is a bit older.

You should discuss colours you want to use, props and outfits as well as “must-have” poses. Just be aware, not all babies will do every pose.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE FOR YOUR SHOOT

Our biggest tip is to give your little one a feed just before the shoot so they are settled and ready for a nap. Dress them is loose-fitting clothes that do not go over their head. A little zippy suit is great. It is better to keep them in a wrap and blankets, than layers of clothes as removing clothes often wake up babies.  It is much easier to pose and photograph a sleeping baby than a restless baby!

If you are getting your hair and makeup done in the studio, then you will sit for that while the photographer captures your newborn for his or her individual photos.  Once you are all dolled up, portraits and family shots will be taken, the photographer is the expert in this circumstance, posing both you and your baby can be tricky so be patient and relaxed and everything will turn out beautifully.

AFTER YOUR SESSION

You can choose to come back on a different day to view your photos or we can take a short break and you can view the photos on the same day. While we prepare the photos for viewing, give the baby a little top-up feed, perhaps a change and we will provide some light snacks for you while you wait. You can view the products we offer, check out our wall art and just chill.

Our biggest tip when it comes to product purchases is to get something other than just digital files. While it is great to have photos to put up on Instagram, social media warps the quality of your photographs and you will then go throw the USB in a draw and never see it again! Albums that you can flick through are a client favorite as well as wall art that will live in your family home forever!

Having a newborn shoot is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you and your child, we can’t recommend enough how important it is to eternalise those memories. Even within a few months, your little buddy will have grown so much from those first few weeks.

I had some newborn photos of my Daughter done with Marianne. Marianne was great with communicating throughout the process from setting up an appointment, making easy conversation throughout the shoot and keeping open communication afterwards. Marianne took beautiful photos of my child and I am so happy with the outcome of the photos. Would recommend Newborn Magic Photography to anyone looking for professional photos of their babies.

Went to Marianne for our son a while ago and recently our baby girl. The photos are excellent and the process was very relaxed because she is so good with children and babies, and also very considerate of new parents. The studio environment is constantly changing and improving so you can see she reinvests in her business.
